The California coast, most notably Carmel and Monterey, is one of my favorite places to visit. But it is not often that I am able to see the many different kinds of wildlife that live in the area - at least not at a relatively close distance. During one visit we were looking for a beach in Moss Landing where we might be able to spot some whales from and we passed a small marina. This little otter was napping on the water as we passed and I just had to go back to photograph him! I had never seen an otter outside of an aquarium in the wild before (they are still somewhat rare as there is a large conservation effort recovering their numbers). It was truly a unique opportunity.
