In 2014, my best friend, my dad, and I decided to plan and take a trip down the California coast on Highway 1 to see the sights on a mini-road trip. We started our trip in Monterey and eventually came to Piedras Blancas. While not a particularly notable spot on Highway 1, this particular stretch of beach after the lighthouse is where elephant seals come to breed and give birth throughout the year! While similar to the sea lions of the San Francisco Bay who I grew up observing, these elephant seals are much larger and much louder - truly sea animals to be reckoned with.
